Protect Big Bend. Defend the Rio Grande.

Grassroots conservation protecting an American national treasure — the habitats, wildlife corridors, and water systems of the Big Bend region.

Who We Are

Our Mission

The Big Bend Protection Alliance is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the long-term ecological health of the Big Bend region—one of the most remote, biologically rich, and threatened landscapes in North America.

We work through community education, scientific partnerships, and lawful advocacy to safeguard the Rio Grande, migratory wildlife corridors, and desert ecosystems for current and future generations.

The Stakes

Why It Matters

  • Habitat Fragmentation

Infrastructure and land-use changes are breaking apart the continuous habitats that native species depend on for survival.

  • Wildlife Corridors

Jaguar, black bear, and hundreds of migratory birds require uninterrupted corridors stretching from Mexico through Texas.

  • River Ecology

The Rio Grande is one of the most endangered rivers in North America. Flow reductions and pollution threaten its entire watershed.

  • Desert Biodiversity

The Chihuahuan Desert hosts more plant and animal diversity than almost any other desert on Earth—much of it still undocumented.

  • Climate Vulnerability

Rising temperatures and prolonged drought amplify every other threat. Healthy ecosystems provide resilience against these changes.

  • Community Livelihoods

Ranchers, Indigenous communities, and small towns depend on clean water and healthy land. Conservation and community go hand in hand.

Our Work

What We Do

Community Education

We host workshops, field trips, and online resources to help residents and visitors understand the region's ecology and what's at stake.

Conservation Support

We partner with scientists, land trusts, and Indigenous stewards to support on-the-ground habitat protection and restoration projects.

Lawful Advocacy

We participate in public comment processes, engage with federal and state agencies, and support evidence-based policy at every level.

Community Organizing

We build coalitions across ranching families, border communities, outdoor recreationists, and conservation groups to amplify shared values.
